GARDEN CITY, Idaho – Stu Flesland fired shutout ball over 6 1/3 innings and Boise State knocked off Niagara 7-1, Tuesday night.
Flesland limited the Purple Eagles (6-9) to two hits, walked three and struck out seven. Wesley Harper worked the final 2 2/3 innings for his second save and became the second freshman in Boise State's NCAA history to have multiple saves in a season.
The Broncos (8-5) used a balanced attack as six players collected an RBI and four players had multi-hit efforts.
Boise State wasted no time against Niagara starter Jacob Bruning, who entered the game with a 1.93 ERA. Geon Hyoung Kim hit the third pitch he saw for a double leading off the bottom of the first. After Dawson Martin's ground out sent Kim to third, Michael Hicks gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead with a single through the left side.
In the fourth, Boise State loaded the bases with one to end Bruning's outing. Reagan Doss greeted reliever Steven Hospital with a single to double the lead.
In the sixth, Doss reached on a two-base error, took third on a wild pitch and scored on balk to make the score 3-0. Boise State added another run in the seventh when Matthew Farman drew a bases loaded walk.
The Broncos tacked on three runs in the eighth. Martin singled to drive in Kim and scored on a double by Grant Gorrell. Joe Yorke capped Boise State's scoring with a single to plate Gorrell.
Boise State was one out away from its second shutout of the season before Niagara got on the board.
The teams will meet in a rubber match at 6:35 p.m., Wednesday.
