Boise State Trio Ready for NCAA Regional

WHAT'S NEXT: Boise State will send three individuals to the NCAA Gymnastics Regional Championship meet in Corvallis, Oregon. Kristina Shchennikova and Mahleea Werline will compete on bars while Sydney Kho will compete on beam. The trio is set to participate in the 2 p.m. MT session on Friday, April 3.

ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST BRONCOS: Five Boise State gymnasts were tabbed All-Mountain West Second Team, including all three NCAA Regional qualifiers in their respective events. In addition to Sydney Kho (Beam), Kristina Shchennikova (Bars) and Mahleea Werline (Bars), Blake Pascal (Floor) and Miraya Nero (All-Around) were recognized. Shchennikova and Pascal are two-time All-MW honorees, while the other three garnered honors for the first time.

KRISTINA KEEPS IT GOING: Kristina Shchennikova won a share of the bars title in Boise State's Feb. 6 quad, recording a 9.875. It gave the sophomore her first-career win on the apparatus. In a March 7 dual at California, she tied for second on bars with a career-best 9.925, Boise State's top-scoring routine this year. On March 13, she earned a career-high 9.900 on floor while posting a 9.875 on bars and winning a share of the beam crown with a 9.850. She has five overall wins in her career and is the only gymnast on the Boise State roster with a title in multiple events in her career. She tallied a 9.850 on bars and floor at Stanford on March 15 and scored 9.825 or better in all three events at the Mountain West Championship. Her bars NQS of 9.850 is tied for the top mark on the team and fifth in the league. The sophomore is one of three gymnasts in the conference to have a high score of 9.900 or better in three events this year.

BROUGHT IT ON BARS: Mahleea Werline enters the NCAA Regional meet on a streak of seven-straight 9.825+ bars routines, including a career-high 9.900 in a March 13 home dual, which gave her the event title for the first time in her career. Her streak is the longest by a Bronco since 2023-24, when Emily Lopez had 11-straight routines of 9.825 or better. Werline's NQS on bars was 9.850, tied for the team lead and fifth in the conference. The junior has appeared in Boise State's bars lineup every meet since joining the team, totaling 37 routines.

KHO-BOOM: Sydney Kho captured her first vault title of the year and second of her career at Air Force on Jan. 23, scoring a season-high 9.825. On March 13, she earned a share of the beam title for the first time in her career, posting a 9.850. She followed that with a career-best 9.900 beam score at Stanford and a 9.825 on beam in the Mountain West Championship, giving her a streak of seven-straight 9.800+ beam routines. Her NQS of 9.845 was a team-high and ranked sixth in the conference. The senior appeared in Boise State's vault lineup in all but two meets in her career, completing 45 routines.

PACK THE X: Boise State set a single-meet attendance record in the Jan. 30 home opener, bringing in a crowd of 2,986. The Broncos averaged an announced attendance of 2,310 this season, breaking the previous record of 2,196, set in 2025.

BIRD BACK WITH THE BRONCOS: Head coach Tina Bird is in her 19th season at the helm, serving as co-head coach from 2008-19 before becoming the lone head coach in 2020. From 1990-2007, she was an assistant coach for Boise State. Bird was a gymnast at Boise State from 1986-89, holding the school's floor record for four years. In her 36 years on staff, Boise State has produced 34 NCAA Regional appearances, 15 conference titles and 13 All-Americans. Bird has earned the conference coach of the year eight times.
