How Sweep It Is

LOGAN, Utah – Marissa Gonzalez was 4-for-6 with a double, three home runs, seven RBI and five runs to lead Boise State to a doubleheader sweep of Utah State, Wednesday.
 
The Broncos (20-23, 6-8 Mountain West) posted an 11-6 win in the opener and routed the Aggies (16-23, 5-9) 13-2 in six innings in game two.
 
In game one, Gonzalez staked Boise State to a first-inning lead with a three-run home run.
 
After Utah State scored in the second, the Broncos responded with a three-run third. Skylar Stroh led off the inning with a home run and Jorja Crider added a two-run home run in the frame.
 
Gonzalez increased the advantage to 7-1 when she led off the fifth with her second long ball. After the Aggies closed to within 7-5, the Broncos put the game away with a four-run seventh.
 
Rustie Riley delivered a two-run single, Talia Jenkins singled in a run and Sophia Romero came home on a wild pitch.
 
In the nightcap, Gonzalez again got the Broncos on the board early, this time with a solo home run in the first. The Aggies scored twice in their half of the inning, but Jenkins put the Broncos back in front with a two-run single in the second.
 
In the fourth, Kate Penberthy led off with a home run. Romero tripled and scored on a single by Hollie Farmer to extend the lead to 5-2.
 
The Broncos exploded for eight runs in the sixth to close out the win. Jenkins knocked in two with a double and Quinn Southerland followed with a sacrifice fly for an 8-2 lead.
 
Gonzalez drove in two with a double and scored on a double by Kaylee Vieira. Penberthy capped the rally with a two-run single.
 
NOTES
  • Boise State has won seven-straight meetings with Utah State.
  • The Broncos hit six home runs in the doubleheader.
  • Marissa Gonzalez collected four extra-base hits, including three home runs, and drove in seven runs in the doubleheader.
  • Talia Jenkins recorded five RBI, including a career-high four in game two.
  • Kodi Crabtree registered the final-six outs in game two to earn her first-collegiate save.
